Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO)

Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO)

What is hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO)?

HVO stands for "Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil". Vegetable oils, waste, oils and fats from residual materials, such as used cooking oil, are used for production. Hydrogen is used to convert the vegetable oils into paraffins. In this way, their properties can be harmonised with those of fossil fuels. HVO can either be used as an additive to conventional diesel fuel or replace it completely.

The Federal German Council has recently formally adopted the amendment to the 10th BImSchV (Regulation on the Implementation of the Federal Immission Control Act). This creates the legal basis for the sale of HVO in Germany as a pure fuel at public petrol stations. This regulation will enter into force on the day after its issuance, but no earlier than 13 April 2024.
